MCINTYRE VINEYARD

Our home vineyard, the McIntyre vineyard (Google link – 38º 16’ 18.14” S, 145º 05’ 52.65” E) is mainly planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (with a small amount of Shiraz and Nebbiolo). It is an elevated site (by Northern Peninsula standards – about 80 metres above sea level) with a gentle north to north-westerly facing slope. The topsoil is very sandy but the subsoil is unusually vine-friendly clay with veins of sand and gravel running through it. Deep down in this layer one encounters red coloured clay and rock indicating the presence of oxides of iron.
Once the vines reach maturity, they require no irrigation, having put their roots deeply into this layer. The oldest vines were planted in 1983, although newer plantings to improve clonal selections, and to include a little experimental Nebbiolo now make up approx. 2/5ths of the 12 acre vineyard site).
We are always keen to continue to enhance the quality of fruit by focussing on the vineyard and Dr Dylan Grigg has been consulting with us on our vineyard management in recent years. The best chardonnay and pinot noir from here are selected for the ‘The Moorooduc’ McIntyre Vineyard single vineyard wines.
